| For those who may not know it, Matthew Reinhart is a master draftsman. His poignant sketch of Cinderella for the cover of the book is a perfect example.
Before any of the pop-ups are created, Matthew spends a great deal of time on character studies and costumes. Amazingly it was more difficult to come up with the design for Cinderella's simple dress than her ball gown!
Matthew's artwork always has a sense of whimsy. His fairy godmother is clearly a departure from past concepts.
The newly envisioned tale has taken on a much larger scale and any large scale epic needs a supporting cast. Although the story has been expanded, Matthew chose to keep some aspects traditional, such as the 1770's setting.

| After designing the characters the pop-up work begins. One of the most spectacular moments is when Cinderella's rags transform into a magnificent ball gown!
One of the biggest pop-ups in Matthew's career has to be this superb castle on the last page. These white prototypes or "dummies" help the publisher understand Matthew's vision before proceeding to the finished artwork.
To promote the publication of "Cinderella," Simon & Schuster created a single pop-up from the finished book which shows a silver-foiled carriage pulled by six white horses (that each raise their head as the pop is opened)!
| Since so much of the story of "Cinderella" revolves around the idea of transformation, Matthew designed a pop-up never seen before. When the page is closed part of the pop-up is visible through an acetate window. As the page is opened that image disappears and transforms into something completely different, in this case from a rat to a coachman!
