Sneak Peek!

Recently, we were fortunate to visit Ellen Rubin and get a chance to see her newly constructed library.  Known around the world as The Pop-up Lady, she is an avid collector that has amassed a remarkable collection of movable books and ephemera.  Ellen also shares her pop-up treasures through her writings, lectures, and exhibits that she has helped curate.
Faced with countless fine examples of movable books spanning hundreds of years, we asked Ellen to display some of her favorite pieces from the turn of the century.  With a knowing smile she produced delicate volvelles and Nisters, McLoughlin titles and Meggendorfers; all within arm’s reach.
Here’s a sampling of images that we took while trying not to drool on the amazing pop-ups!  To see more examples from Ellen’s collection please check out her wonderfully informative website at http://www.popuplady.com/

The Pop-up Lady displays one of her favorite Kubasta pop-up titles in her new library. Everything is housed in cherry wood shelving with UV glass protection in the room windows.

Ellen has a separate section for her unique novelty and artist books.  Among these is a delightful sand toy of a prancing ballerina.

Autumn is represented here in this pop-up that comes complete with lines for the French child to act out while admiring the miniature stage.

In this German pop-up scene a jester treats some young children to a frightening show.  The story progresses by the rotation of a wheel attached to the back of the rear layer.  Kids must have been tougher in those days!

Here’s the cover illustration of “The Bad Dream”, a sales sample with the original artwork bound into the book.   Keeping true to the name, the story follows the near death of an adventurer causing us to wonder if the book was ever successful in the children’s market.

This version of a popular children’s story was constructed with multiple rivets and the viewer would jiggle from the reverse causing the boy and tiger to gyrate and almost dance around the page!

We were delighted for Ellen to show this more unorthodox mechanic from a Nister title.

Here is a shot of the movable in action as she rotates the four separate revolving images thus creating a mix and match composition.

One last parting shot of the Pop-up Lady and all her treasures.  We can’t wait to come back and explore some more!
