| Robert's "America!" |
| As many of you may have heard through the grape vine, Robert's next pop-up book will be a tribute to American landmarks, both natural and manmade. "America the Beautiful" will highlight some of this nation's greatest treasures all gloriously reproduced in Robert's stunning, pure white pop-ups. Here's a look at some to the early stages.

| Since New York City has been Robert's home for so many years there is no doubt that "Lady Liberty" would be included. This has been one of the most challenging pop-ups for the book because Robert insisted on the statue expressing "subtly and grace."
Robert's first home was in the farmlands of Michigan so he felt it was important to include a tribute to America's farmers. And, yes, you'll by happy to know the windmill does spin!
The Mississippi river (in case you've never seen it) is one of the most visually powerful forces in this country. But how best to show it? Robert decided a paddleboat would be fitting and this one even has "churning water" coming out of the back.

| Of course this nation wouldn't be what it is today without some very influential historical figures. Mount Rushmore will be represented in "America the Beautiful" with the well-known sculpture of the four presidents.
Since this country has such a long history (well before Europeans arrived), Robert felt it was important to include a tribute to the earliest residents. Mesa Verde is seen here in a very small preliminary study.
No single image came to mind when developing the pop-up for America's capital so Robert decided on 3! Here is a very rough, white study for the Washington monument (with reflecting pool) and the Lincoln memorial.

| A close-up view of the early study of the Lincoln monument (there's even a tiny Lincoln inside!). This pop-up spread will also include a large capital building in the back.
This book, like so many of Robert's other pop-ups, contains a small booklet at the end with even more pop-ups. Robert insisted that America's contribution to space be included so there will be a tiny space shuttle!
And finally, what book about America would be complete without an eagle (Benjamin Franklin wanted our national bird to be a turkey!)?
