Sharks!

In April 2006 the sequel to Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart's smash pop-up hit "Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Dinosaurs" will be published by Candlewick Press. "Sharks and Sea Monsters" is chock full of fantastic pop-ups from a world long ago. These images from the original white prototype (called a "dummy") are an exclusive first look at what is sure to be a monster of a pop-up book!
One of the successes of the "Prehistorica" series is its ability to bring things (even dead things, like skeletons!) to life. Mary Anning, one of the first female fossil hunters, even makes an appearance in the book. Mary is the real-life inspiration for the famous tongue twister "she sells sea shells by the sea shore." Some of the sea monsters in the book include this colossal calamari, which brings to mind images of the mythological Kraken!
The monstrous sea scorpion grew to over seven feet in length making it the largest arthropod to ever exist. One of the challenges in creating "Sharks and Sea Monsters" was getting all of the creatures to move in the most realistic way possible. Part python, part iguana, this odd creature lived along the coast of the ancient Middle East and rarely rose above the waves. No book about historical creatures is complete without battles! "Sharks and Sea Monsters" has plenty!
This giant crocodile grandaddy, called sarcosuchus" weighed up to eight tons and ate anything it could get its jaws on. The sarcoschus' mouth was filled with nearly 100 teeth, each the size of railroad spikes! But of course it all comes back to the sharks, and this shark is unlike anything we've ever seen before!
We'll keep you up to date as the release of the "Sharks and Sea Monsters" approaches and will offer SIGNED, first editions at the Gift Shop.
