Sneak Peek!

Robert Sabuda's next pop-up book Beauty & the Beast is scheduled for release in October this year. Here's a sneak peek at some of the process Robert used to make the art.

Come back next month for a peek at some color art!

In this picture you can see several stages of the process.

After making a final pencil sketch on tracing paper, Robert transfers the art onto black paper using blue transfer paper. He traces along the lines of the pencil sketch with a red pen so he can keep track of his progress.

Robert's tracing transfers the art from the pencil sketch onto the black paper in visible blue lines.

Now, he has to carefully cut out the negative space along the blue lines.

He works on the art backwards - turning it over to the other side when it's finished. That way no blue lines show in the final art!

Here you can see Robert's hands as he cuts out more art from this pop-up - a chicken.

You can see what small areas he has to cut - it is very delicate!

Here is the chicken, all cut out from the paper.

The pieces are in strange shapes because they are cut out and folded in all different directions.
