Sneak Peek!

Another semester wraps up at Pratt Institute where Professor Olmon has shared an introduction to paper engineering.  It was a full class comprised of students from all different art backgrounds and they created many exciting pop-ups.  Here is a sampling of some of our favorite projects.  Let’s hope that these budding pop-up artists continue to create such imaginative pops!

Here is a page from a story about a camping trip invaded by skunks.  Stink lines rise from a skunk that wags it’s tail as another darts out from inside a tent!

We get a rare look inside the head of a college student where we find a collection of dizzying spirals spin, which symbolize the artist’s worries.

One of the blind mice jumps out of a shaped card as we explored fairy tales, folk tales, and nursery rhymes.

In this final spread of a story about a ski vacation gone wrong we watch as the artist’s injured ankle becomes swollen as the page opens! Here is an innocent pop-up of a school bus in a huge children’s book that evolves into something darker and more adult with every page.

In this mini pop-up book inspired by a poem, the artist created a very subdued sequence of someone watching the world come to an end.

This student designed a flipbook promotional that used sign language to share about a university.  What a great idea! Not one, but two folding flexagon mailers promoting an automotive company and furniture designers.  Lastly, we have a very slick flipbook complete with gold foil paper that shows a goldfish rise to the surface of a pond.  We hope that all the students also rise to the top of their art fields.  Great job class and good luck!-Professor Olmon.
