Sneak Peek!
As a final assignment for the semester, the young paper engineers at Pratt Institute in new York City were given the task of illustrating a rhyme of the their choice in pop-up. As usual, the results were as creative and outrageous as ever!
A classic rhyme takes a hit as spaghetti gets blown all over the place in this clever pop-up! Two students chose "This little piggy goes to market." With delightfully different results. This simple cover is deceiving as it reveals... ...a jam-packed scene of pop-up piggy heaven! Not only are the pop-ups terrific, but the illustration of the pieces is equally good.
These little piggies practically leap off the page. The repetitive background adds to the crazy fun. "It's raining and pouring" and we know where exactly where this old man is headed. A wonderfully 3-dimensional bed opens up to reveal the old man snoring away! The bare feet are a nice touch, too.
A single fly dances up the cover of this pop-up making us wonder where it will take us. The amazing solution shows us the old woman who swallows a fly. What makes the piece so unique is that the stomach folds open many times to reveal everything that's been swallowed! The Owl and the Pussycat gets a wonderful treatment in keeping with its classic place in children's literature.
This year's crop of students did a fantastic job with their work and we look forward to seeing next semester's pop-ups, too!
The entire poem is revealed on the inside with a great pop-up boat containing the main characters.
