Sneak Peek!
A new semester has arrived for the pop-up makers at Pratt Institute. And this time they have a new professor! Paper engineer Kyle Olmon, of Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart's studio, takes the helm at Paper Engineering 101 at New York City's most famous art school.

The assignment was to create and construct a working pop-up based on any animal or object inspired by the mechanics of a V-fold and Layer. There results are both hilarious and surprisingly sophisticated for a first project.

This dancing duck is surrounding by a multi-colored background in an explosion of pop-up fun! Taking a more fine arts perspective, this unusual pop dubbed "goat head" has wonderfully textured 2D and 3D elements. The torn paper edges make it even more personal. A splendid peacock spreads it's wings will being admired by other envious birds in pop-up that opens like a jewel box top instead like a traditional card.
A delightful view of American eating habits is on display in the well designed and illustrated pop-up. The floating condiments are a nice touch! Edward Gorey seems to be alive and well for the next generation of illustrators. This gloomy view of a city and mysterious stranger in nicely rendered in 3D. Leaning towards the abstract (just because it's a pop-up, doesn't mean it has to be literal!), this pop-up features unusual cut-out texturing, almost like a cheese grater.
A strange monster looms large like a child's nightmare in this pop-up of purple. The students were allowed to use a variety of media for color including marker, colored paper and even pastel. Simplicity is key for elegant corn growing in a field. Sometimes less is more when designing pop-ups. A hilarious dog not only pops up when this card is opened, but it gently scratches it's ear, too!
We'll bring you more Pop-ups from Pratt as the semester continues! And good luck Professor Olmon!
