Super Pickle!
For years Robert Sabuda has been in search of the one book that started it all. When just a young boy, Robert was introduced to the world of pop-ups with the book "The Adventures of Super Pickle." After searching the world (and the Internet) without success he finally came across a copy last month. The book was so important to him that he wanted to share it with all of you. So here, in his own words, is Robert’s first hero, Super Pickle!
I first came across Super Pickle in the office of my dentist. Looking back now I’m not really sure what the attraction was, but surely it had something to do the fact that the book was about a superhero who was also a pickle. What’s cooler than a pickle in a cape?

When I opened the first page not only did the artwork say "KA-BOOM!" but the character of Super Pickle POPPED UP out of the page. I must have opened that page a million times trying to understand how it worked.

What does a Super Pickle do? He fights vegetable crime! Duh! Here Super Pickle works over an evil head of cabbage. I think another reason I liked this book so much is because I absolutely hated (and still do) cooked cabbage.

Some of the pages in the book did not have pop-ups. They had very stiff pieces of paper, that when pulled, produced movement. This was the first time I experienced a pull-tab and I immediately began to pry open the books pages to look down inside and see how things worked.

Of course the heroine has no idea that her mild-mannered friend is really Super Pickle (sound familiar?). And what's with that giant pickle jar she's sitting on? Is that where she lives?

Super Pickle also has several pages of large pop-up scenes of buildings. This really intrigued me but, I'm also ashamed to admit, was my first introduction to architecture.

So Super Pickle's lady friend continues to dream away about her hero, via a rotating paper wheel, while he does his best to keep his identity a secret. And nothing says "I'm just a regular, normal guy" quite like a pair of shoe spats.

Our hero continues to carry out his good deeds like rescuing "Baby Gherkin." But this act is witnessed by the heroine, who realizes his true identity, although all of this should have been a little more obvious given that he's the only other pickle who lives in town.

In the end everything works out and the couple are married in the presence of all the other village vegetables. It's too bad I wasn't born later because I bet I would have LOVED "Vegetales!"
