Book Artist Spotlight: Rand Huebsch
Rand Huebsch is a printmaker, teacher and book artist. He is a co-founder of the Manhattan Graphics Center, a fine-art printmaking school, and his works are collected by many museums and institutions. We have chosen some of our favorite accordion and tunnel-books to view this month. You can find more of his art at: www.randhuebsch.com. |

Based on the 18th-century play, "The School for Scandal" is a large tunnel book with movable parts that the viewer can manipulate by means of strings attached. |
The book does not depict a specific scene, but rather is intended to convey the spirit of the play, and the viewer can manipulate the figures, alluding to the scheming and strategies of the play's characters. |
Rand feels that the tunnel book format creates a nice tension between the autonomy of each panel and that of the entire book, which is shown in "Fable 1". |
 |
With "Circe" we can see the many colorful embossed panels connected with custom rubberstamped paper strips. |
"Not out of the Woods yet" was one of Rand's first tunnel books. |
We are "Not out of the Woods yet"! Here's a head on view that takes us deep into the wilderness. |
 |
"Night Desert" brings an armadillo, wolf, lizard, and owl to life as he scrapes crayons over the top of the deeply embossed areas, which remain black. |
Rand also creates many beautiful accordion books, like "Semaphore" which shows the high relief of his wonderful embossed illustrations. |
Our final accordion book is "Aviary" which unfolds into parade of our feathered friends. |
