Pop-up Exhibit in New Paltz, NY!

From April 11 – 30, 2005 the Sojourner Truth Library at the State University of New York, New Paltz was host to "Ideas in Motion: The History of Pop-up and Movable Books: Books & Ephemera from the Collection of Ellen G.K. Rubin." This spectacular exhibit was a fitting point for National Library Week 2005 and both Ellen Rubin and Robert Sabuda were on hand for the opening.
The Sojourner Truth Library was the perfect setting to showcase just a fraction of the collection of long time pop-up and movable collector Ellen Rubin. Located at the main entrance to the library, the beautiful cases held a bounty of carefully selected titles that give an overview of the history of movable books as well as artist's books. One of the oldest volumes in the exhibit it this book containing the earliest type of movable called a volvelle. The paper disc and other paper elements turn on a string pivot to help the reader make calculations.
This reproduction of one of the most famous books in the world, with hand colored volvelles in it, was created for king! The first type of movable book for young readers was the "turn-up" or "harlequinade." This flap book used the idea of transformation (by turning up the flap) to help move the story along. Ideas in Motion included items of paper that moved in a completely different way. This tunnel book from the 1800's could expand like an accordion to allow viewer to peep into the two eye holes at the front!
One of the highlights of the exhibit was a case devoted solely to process of creating pop-up books. Shown here is Bruce Foster's (creator of the pop-up invitation for the exhibit) preliminary white dummy for "Little Red Riding Hood." The finished book is displayed for comparison. In the same case were preliminaries for a pop-up medical brochure about bones. The white dummy is seen at left and a hand-colored mock-up at right. The final printed version of the pop-up bones is shown at the far right.
