A Moveable Feast!
In the heart of Chicago lies Columbia College. In the heart of the college campus lies the Chicago Center for Book & Paper Arts, and in the heart of the center lies the exhibition gallery. It was here that a moveable feast was consumed by the hungry eyes of the Movable Book Society and many other students and visitors. Spanning hundreds of years and drawing from different countries, the exhibition showcased some of the finest examples of movable and pop-up books. The show has just come down, but here are a few snapshots of the event!
There were wonderful examples of pop-up books from the Blue Ribbon Publishing Company based in Chicago in the 1930s. There was an entire case devoted to the work of paper engineer, John Strejan, which included many of his produced books as well as rare artifacts like a self-portrait doodle on a napkin. Along side many of the books were the rough "dummy" drafts, like this detail from Ron Van der Meer's Architecture Pack.

One wall of the exhibit was devoted to Ib Penick's exploration of every facet of pop-up production. He thought of every detail, right down to the height of the chair for each worker!

Not everything was decades old! Here is a prototype pill bug from an upcoming artist book created by paper engineer, Shawn Sheehy.

With a backdrop of Vojtech Kubasta's original art and photographs, Ellen Rubin introduces Dagmar Vrkljan with Columbia College gallery coordinator, Bill Drendel looking on.

As you can see, it was standing room only, as everyone crowded around the cases of art to hear stories from Kubasta's career by his daughter, Dagmar.

Of the hundreds of products that Kubasta created we were able to find a new favorite with this silly polar scene!

One of the main forces behind the show, John Railing was a wealth of knowledge and anecdotes as he shared the backstories to many of the pop-up book behind the glass cases.
