Artist Spotlight: Ed Hutchins
Ed Hutchins is currently one of most innovative, popular and just plain FUN book artists in the country. He began making books in the early 1960's, yet followed a path that had him working in more fields than can be imagined until the 1980's when he finally considered himself a full-time BOOK ARTIST! His works is 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional and, yes, even 4-dimensional (some pieces involving the element of time). Powerful, bold yet with remarkable sense of style and grace Ed creates books unlike anyone else.
Ed earned a B.S. in Government Administration from the University of Arizona and has studied at the Center for Book Arts in New York City with many professional book artists. Mostly, he's learned to be a book artist by doing, and doing, and doing. He also teaches the art of the book, and says there's nothing like teaching for learning. Since 1989 he has been the proprietor of Editions, a workshop for producing artist book multiples.
Ed has had 10 solo exhibitions of his work from New York to Florida to California and participated in 5 juried shows across the country. His books can be found in the collections of many institutions including the School of Art Institute Chicago, Houghton Library at Harvard University and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
He was also the creator of the first Book Arts Jamboree in 1998, and in 1999, with co-director bookbinder Carolyn Chadwick. In 1998 he started Book Central, a mail order company supplying how-to books about the book arts to artists and educators.
Ed lives in Mt. Vernon, about a half-hour from Manhattan with his partner Steve Warren. He spends his days making books, planning shows of artist books and teaching an occasional school class or community workshop. To learn more about Ed and his work please visit www.artistbooks.com.
