URURUN (Home Stay Travelog)

The Japanese documentary tv show URURUN (which translates to Home Stay Travelog) sends a Japanese actor from Japan to the country of a master artist to learn their specific talent. The reality show documents the entire trip from beginning to end. In this case, the actor was Shunsuke Daito, 23 originally from Osaka and now living in Tokyo. He stayed with Robert and Matthew for one week at their apartment. The crew filmed his process each day from morning till late night working on his own pop-up book. Shunsuke chose a long beloved Japanese tale, Momotaro, which translates to Peach Boy. The episode aired June 24th on TBS Japan. Stay tuned for a video clip and more photos documenting this extravaganza!

Matthew and Robert team up to help Shunsuke decide what spread of Peach Boy should be turned into pop-ups. They were an ambitious bunch!

Shunsuke at the studio hard at work. He's got a week to complete two spreads with side flaps for the story with no prior experience in art, design, or paper engineering!

Shunsuke accomplishes his first mockup spread where Momotaro, the peach boy, pops out of the peach.

.

Studio paper engineers, Teen Liu and Michael Caputo give Shunsuke helpful tips with his mechanisms.

A shot of the Demon Island scene while driving to Scholastic to present his book to art directors and editors.

Matthew makes a quick snip as they approach the Scholastic offices. Making every minute count!

Shunsuke presents one of two finished spreads where Momotaro pops out of the peach. Sugoi! (amazing)

Robert hams it up for the camera!

A celebration for a well accomplished week with senior editor Ken Geist of Scholastic. Well done, Shunsuke!
Stay tuned for more....!
