Artist Spotlight: Peter Callesen
For a number of months now we have been running across the work of Peter Callesen. We have been captivated by this Danish artist’s works in paper and want to share with our fans his amazingly intricate sculptures he creates from a single sheet of paper. Below are some close-ups of some of our favorite compositions. If you would like to see more of these “papercuts” as well as learn about his works in other mediums, follow this link to his website at: www.petercallesen.com.

Inspired by fairytales and romanticism, Peter created the Impenetrable Castle which has been translated from this intimate view to a gallery installation over 12 feet tall! This detail of Half Way Through shows Peter’s attention to the duality of life and death, and 2D and 3D space that surfaces in much of his work. Looking Back showcases a wonderful use of grounding the sculpture and using positive and negative space.

Peter really pushes the positive/negative composition to create a wonderful narrative in Closet.

We can see the attention to detail and intricate sculpting and design in this recent work titled, On The Other Side.

In Mirage, Peter created a life-size replica of a staircase entirely out of paper. Can you tell which one is the real set of stairs?!?

Teetering story upon story is stacked upon the 18,2 cm Tall Tower of Babel rising 7 inches from the base.

Peter creates a ghostly image of a Wedding Dress Without Bride, complete with complex curves and a flowing bridal train.

Shifting from the pedestal to the wall, Peter interjects colors to accent his large scale framed composition called Alive, but Dead.
